Newcastle Eagles left the Guildford Spectrum with a win, after
defeating a lacklustre Heat side.

Fab Flournoy opened the scoring for the Eagles with a put back, closely
followed by 1 of 2 free throws from Darius Defoe. Mike Martin responded
to open the Heat scoring from close range, before Jeremy Hyatt nailed
the first of his 2 triples on the way to 12 1st quarter points. His
second starting a 7-0 run for the Eagles to take them out to a 13-4
lead. An 8-2 Heat run including the injured Danny Gilbert's first trey,
Chad's score off his own offensive rebound, and Dean Williams three
closed the gap to 1 at 18-19 before the Eagles finished off the quarter
with a 7-1 run. Shawan Robinson nailed a three from just inside his own
half on the buzzer send the Eagles in 26-19 up at the first break.

The two teams traded baskets in the early stages of the second quarter.
Chad McKnight feeding Mike Martin a couple of nice assists, and Jeremy
Hyatt continuing his scoring for the Eagles either side of a referees
timeout to deal with a shot clock problem. Midway through the quarter
the Eagles embarked on a 7-0 run, including two from the free throw
line after a Paul James was called for a coach technical, to give them
a 45-29 lead with 4.01 left. Brian Dux' deuce stopped the rot only to
see further 8-0 run to move Newcastle out to a 53-31 lead. Shawan
Robinson showing his quality, adding 5 points during both runs. The
Heat hit back, closing out the quarter with an 8-2 run to leave the gap
at 39-55 at the halfway point. Danny Gilbert adding 4 of the 8 points.

The Eagles again opened strongly in the second half, opening with a 9-3
run including a TJ Walker try with only Brian Dux' 3 point play for the
Heat in reply. A 10-5 run in reply for the Heat on the back of 6 points
from Chad McKnight and 4 from Dean Williams closed the gap to 17 at
69-52, but the Eagles closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run including a
late trey from Jeremy Hyatt to give the Eagles a 76-54 lead at the 3rd
quarter break.

The start of the 4th quarter saw the real Guildford Heat take to the
court. Dean Williams' trey kicked off a 16-2 run for the Heat as they
got to within 8 points, and threatened a fantastic comeback. Mike
Martin added 7 points including a rare 3 pointer and 2 dunks, and
Daniel Gilbert added 4 from 2 Brian Dux assists. Jeremy Hyatt's 2 from
the line stopped the charge, and the Heat couldn't get going again
after that. Mike Martin added a further bucket taking him to 9 4th
quarter points, but despite 2 timeouts from Paul James the Eagles
rattled off the last 5 points of the game to run out 85-72 winners.
