Problems with D'Antoni

I don't get all the complaining about D'Antoni.  It's legitimate to
question whether he's capable of coaching a team that pays proper mind
to defense.  However, the oft-occurring argument "Why hire a good
coach? This team sucks!" is absurd.  The Knicks should then hire a
lousy coach to complement a crummy team?  Me, I'm not crushed that
Walsh rejected the unproven commodity Mark Jackson.  What, because
he's an ex Knick and because he's reasonably eloquent on TV, this
means he's a tremendous coach?  And what exactly has Avery Johnson
proven that D'Antoni hasn't?  Both coaches underachieved with
excellent teams.  And thank god Walsh never entertained the Patrick
Ewing nonsense.  Imagine how intense Ewing's surly demeanor would rise
to the fore after a couple of scathing NY Post articles.  He would've
been a complete disaster.  He couldn't even hack the NYC pressure as a
player, much less as the coach!  Neither am I convinced that Ewing is
exactly a basketball mastermind.

Since I'm not footing the bill, I have no problem seeing a qualified
coach coming in during the incipient stages of what will be a
painfully slow post-Isiah reconstruction process.
