Just heard the highlights, but they sounded good. Now, lots of
politicians sound good when they enter office before they do anything,
so I'm not jumping on the bandwagon just yet, but Walsh talked about
making cap space in 2010. When was the last time we had a new Knicks
GM talk about making cap space and constructing the roster with
responsible, tradeable deals in the Dolan era? Answer: never. Hmm,
maybe with the exception of the 8th seed miracle year of lockout 1999,
that's why the Knicks have either choked or sucked since?
I'm not drinking the Walsh Kool Aid just yet, but I do think there's
at least a chance that this can be a good thing for the Knicks, which
isn't just chump change when you consider what we've been going
through for years now. I just heard a couple of minutes of the press
conference, but what I heard was more sensible than the last three GMs
put together. I was always a fan of the Walsh rebuilding project
between the Finals team of 2001 and the completely reconstructed EC
finals teams of 2003-2006, which was downright masterful -- obviously,
since they took the reins from Walsh's hands and put them in Bird's,
less so, but they completely rebuilt that team in Indy from finals
contender to finals contender in four years and didn't even miss the
PLAYOFFS in between (and who knows how much better they might have
done without the unfortunate coaching choice?)
Let's hope, despite that, that Walsh's allegiance to Bird is still
very, very strong. 'Cause we know if there can be only one guy
screaming "Fire Isiah" louder than Dan Gaters, it's Larry Bird.
