There have been a number of games in which the Sixers have lost to =
superior opponents in which I've taken positive signs of improvement. =
Last night's game was a win on the road against a team of about =
equivalent talent, which should be mildly encouraging, but strangely I =
am left pondering the negatives. Perhaps I need to ratchet down my =
expectations.=20
The announcers were just swooning over Andre Ig, and while he had a very =
nice offensive game, lost in the stats was that his man, Jason =
Richardson, scored just as much (35) as did Andre (33). So that was a =
net wash. The announcers gushed about how many offensive rebounds the =
Sixers took, which they did, but rarely did the rebounder actually put =
an O-board back into the basket. Examples: Carney took 4 O-boards (!) =
but shot 0-4. Reggie Evans took down 5 O-boards, shot 0-3. Hmmmmm. =
Once again, neither Andre Ig or any of the guards played any perimeter =
defense, and the Bobcats shot 42 % from beyond the arc. Again the =
Sixers shot crummy at the foul line, 68%. I watched the whole game, and =
it's still hard to figure how the Sixers won this one.=20
The Bobcats did miss a lot of shots in the third quarter (other than =
uncontested three-pointers) so maybe we need to give some credit to the =
inside defense, but perhaps it was just lousy shooting on the part of =
the home team.=20
Positives: well, Old Slow Andre Miller enjoyed the fact that Ray Felton =
was out with injury, and he abused Jeff McInnis badly, with 23 points =
and 9 assists. Give credit to Miller, the guy knows how to play, it's =
too bad he doesn't have the speed? energy? desire? to cover guys on =
the perimeter any more. In 14 minutes, Jason Smith had 6 points on 3-3 =
shooting, 4 rebounds, and a blocked shot. If Coach Cheeks wants to =
bring Reggie Evans off the bench to get more speed and scoring in the PF =
spot, Smith might be a better bet here than last night's starter, =
Thaddeus Young, who looked out of sorts on the court. It's fine with me =
to increase Young's minutes, maybe even as a starter, but I think he =
might do better at the SF spot, moving Andre Ig to SG. Just a thought!
---- Kurt Straub=20
P.S. if he is ever available, I'll take Okafor on my team to play PF.
