I followed the first half on ESPN gamecast, and was able to get a fair =
sense of the game. Here is what I learned.=20
1. The experiment of using Jason Smith as a center was a failure. In =
ten minutes of the first quarter, he had zero points, zero rebounds, one =
turnover and two personal fouls. You can't tell this from the medium, =
but my best guess is that he was generally abused by Okur and Boozer. =20
2. On the other hand, Herbert Hill held his own, and by the end of the =
game had 7 boards in 10 minutes, not too shabby. I wonder if the house =
band will play "76 trombones" whenever he comes on the court. No wait, =
that's Harold Hill. Anyway, this explains why Coach Cheeks was using =
Hill at center and Smith at PF. Sunuvagun, maybe that Maurice is =
smarter than I thought.=20
3. Don't be fooled by the decent boxscore line by Willie Green, he was =
useless in the first quarter while the jazz were running out to a 14 =
point lead. His man, Brewer, went 7-8 in the first ten minutes of the =
game. I had high hopes for Green this year, who was improved at the end =
of last year and now had another off-season to heal his knee. So far, =
WG has looked than ever this year. Right now, there is no way he should =
be starting. Lou Williams is the best shooter we can play at two guard =
now, and sadly Andre Ig may have to move back there for considerable =
minutes.=20
4. Reggie Evans is the same every game: rebounds well, can't shoot a =
basket to save his life. The Sixers will need lots of firepower out of =
the other four spots on the court this year.=20
5. The Sixers are now 0-4 in the exhibition season but we can expect =
more of the same in the regular seson if a) Dalembert is out for any =
length of time, b) Korver doesn't find his touch, and mostly c) Andre Ig =
continues his sleepwalking. He was no factor at alll in the first half =
agaisnt the Jazz, and finished with only 5-14 shooting, even though he =
played for 38 minutes. That is a very bad sign.=20
