So there seems to be growing praise for Williams around the summer
league, and a bit for Carney as well after he scored 30 the other day
against the Lakers. However, while I've only looked at pieces of
video, it looks--primarily from the boxes and the bits I've seen--that
both of them are still deeply flawed players.
--Williams has been scoring a lot, averaging 25 points, though much of
that has been from the line where he's averaging 13 attempts per
game. That's still a good thing though that he can get to the line in
such a way. It does show, however, that he's dominating the ball in a
bad way--and this was very noticeable in the tape I've seen. At this
point he's clearly way too out of control to run a team with averages
of 6.4 turnovers against 5 assists. In only one game did he have more
assists than turnovers. He is averaging more than 5 boards however,
which is great for a 6-1 guy and is shooting percentage is around 46%
which is relatively decent. The point I suppose is that while he
clearly has potential and should improve with time, a lot of these
tendencies show that his game is more in the Iverson territory and
that he may not be the long-term solution at PG (which supposedly
being modeled on a Miller-like player).
--Carney meanwhile found his shot over the last three games--including
some clutch shots against the Lakers--making a combined 25-47. Not
bad Rodney. The problem? He just can't do anything else. He's got 0
assists in the last two games and is averaging exactly 1 over 5
games. On the boards he's not doing much better getting all of 2.6,
and that would be a lot worse if he didn't get an uncharacteristic 6
in one game. Basically he's an athletic guy who is something of a
ball hog on the floor that can sometimes get hot and play at least
satisfactory defense. He should probably never be more than a 9th or
10th guy on a team though.
