Sorta like last year, when Scorsese finally got Best Director. Was The
Departed great? Maybe. But it was damned good, and besides, he'd never
won Best Director, even after:

Taxi Driver
Good Fellas
Raging Bull
Mean Streets
Last Temptation of Christ
etc.

It gets to the point where voters think, "What sort of a joke will we
look like if we never give it to this guy at least once? And what if
this is his last worthy picture? Best do it now, for his whole body of
greatness..." I think that's legit. It would tarnish the MVP if Kobe
never wins it once. And with Chris Paul and esp LeBron in ascendancy,
this should factor into a voter's mind this year.
