Avery Johnson?

by "Del Stanley" <dgstan@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Feb 28, 2008 at 11:23 PM

I was going to post this a couple of weeks, and should have
because it is going to look like second guessing now.

Avery has to win strictly on emoting his players, not strategy.
If you are a Mav fan, and the game is close (within 3 points),
you really have to sweat. If the Mavs are down say 2-3 points,
and there are say 20-30 seconds left in the game I HATE to
see Avery call a timeout. It is worthless, and totally pointless.
It NEVER results in a good play. He pulls out that clip board,
and does a lot of doodling. He "looks" like he's doing some
serious coaching. When you see the results it looks like
some cartoon play designed by Bugs Bunny! That's IF
you can even get the ball in!

We 'd better blow people out. Last seconds strategies
against the likes of Pop of the Spurs, Riley, Phil Jackson,
etc. well we can forget it. I don't ever recall his last second
designs working. Last year, he had a foul to give against the
Spurs with about 15 secs left. The book says you foul
regardless. Huh? Pop KNEW what he would do. The Spurs
throw the ball in, and IMMEDIATELY jack up a wild shot
behind the three point line! Mavs fouled of course---Pop KNEW
he would. Duncan shot 3 free throws. Fortunately for the Mavs
time ran out on the Spurs. When Avery takes time out to
"set something up" the other coach is setting something
better up against Avery. It never fails.

Don't bother calling time out in these situations Avery, the
other guy is smarter. The best strategy may be to not let THEM
set up! Too many NBA and college coaches try to impress us
with their "look at me I'm really coaching...watch how I
design a play, watch me call three quick time outs so everybody
can see that I'm really in control----watch me call the plays."
"I'm the general, I'm in charge. Don't believe me? Listen how
I scream on the sidelines, that proves I'm a good coach."

What was he thinking tonight? Bass had one of his better
games, so where was he Avery in the last couple of
minutes of a close game? Why, oh why would we trade
for Kidd if he's going to sit out the most crucial seconds
of the game? That makes no sense. Was he hurt? Terry
who shot 20% takes the last shot against the Spurs
BEST DEFENDER! Go figure. Is that what Avery
designed? This is EXACTLY why you want Kidd!
It is unlikely you would get a broken play with Kidd.

Like I said, we had better blow people out, or be leading
by at least 6 points under a minute. Avery is a good
person, citizen, etc. but in close games he is in over
his head. Can anyone recall a last second design by
Avery in the last couple of years that worked?
Okay, don't answer I'm getting back on the road
tonight and will not be able to see post.

Just blowin off a little steam :>
