Creating a new .alt newsgroup isn't very difficult. Neither is it
difficult to propagate the new newsgroup BUT IT DOES take time and
DEDICATION to do so successfully.
Myself and other Wa****ngton Nationals baseball fans were able to get
the alt.s****ts.baseball.wash-nationals newsgroup created about one
month ago and now the newsgroup is in a slow but steady process of
propagating across the Internet with it being added to more news
servers each week.
It's pretty easy to get most diligent newsgroup administrators to add a
non-binary, text only newsgroup about a major league s****ts team to
their news server AS LONG AS THERE IS A REAL INTEREST in the team FROM
USENET USERS!
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any real interest from USENET
users in regards to either the new Charlotte Bobcats or the New Orleans
Hornets to justify a new newsgroup for either team.
But if you want to try to create a new newsgroup for either the Hornets
or the Bobcats, here are the steps one needs to take.
1. Read the detailed instructions on how to create an .alt newsgroup at
http://www.nylon.net/alt/newgroup.htm
2. Propose the new newsgroup on alt.config
3. After making any modifications to the proposed newsgroup based on
the feedback received from the alt.config, create the new newsgroup by
sending out a CORRECTLY FORMATTED Control Message to create the new
newsgroup.
4. Now the tedious part. Most newsgroups ARE NOT AUTOMATICALLY added
to news servers once a successful control message has been sent out.
Instead, those USENET users interested in subscribing to the new
newsgroup need to contact their respective ISP's newsgroup
administrators to add the new group to their newsgroup servers. If the
control message that was sent out for the new group had been correctly
formatted, your newsgroup administrator should have no problem in
adding the new group to your news server. Most admins seem to add a
new non-binary newsgroup within two business days AFTER receiving a
request from one of their USENET users.
So it really helps to have as many USENET users interested in the new
group to have it be successfully propagated across the Internet,
otherwise it will probably end up being added to only a few number of
news servers.
Sadly, there doesn't seem to be too much interest in neither the
Hornets nor the Bobcats to justify new newsgroups for either of those
teams.
