PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Quakers kept the game within reach for the first 20
minutes against a hot Brown team gunning for its seventh straight win, but
the Bears capitalized on Penn's poor second-half shooting and 27 turnovers
to deal them a 65-47 loss, Friday evening at the Pizzitola S****ts Center
in
Providence, R.I.
Brown (10-8, 4-1 Ivy) used a 10-0 run to jump out to a 17-5 lead in the
first
10 minutes of the game before Penn crept back with seven straight points,
keyed by two Carrie Biemer jumpers.
After a 9-2 run gave the Bears a 29-17 advantage, the Quakers closed out
the
first half with 10 straight points of their own off a three-point play by
Brilynne Parrish, two baskets by Joey Rhoads and a three-pointer by
Biemer,
making the score 29-24 at the midpoint.
Penn (3-14, 1-3 Ivy) shot 47.6 percent to Brown's 34.3 percent from the
field in the first half, but the Bears' 18 points off of 14 Quaker
turnovers
proved to be the difference.
In the second stanza, a layup by freshman Maggie Burgess cut the deficit
to
four points with just over 16 minutes remaining, but it would be as close
as
Penn would get for the rest of the contest.
Brown capitalized on more Penn giveaways and cold shooting (they shot 28.6
percent in the second half) to put together scoring runs of 11-2 and 12-0,
which the Quakers could not recover from.
Despite the loss, a bit of history was made as senior Jennifer Fleischer
surpassed Auretha Fleming (1981-84) for fifth on the all-time rebounding
list at Penn with her second board of the game (the 750th of her career).
Fleischer finished the game with two points and six rebounds.
Kimberly Franklin led the Quakers with a career-high 14 points while
Biemer
added eight points on the night.
Colleen Kelly paced Brown with 14 points while Jaclyn Vocell hit nine of
her
11 points from three-point range.
The Quakers stay on the road to face Yale on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the John
J.
Lee Amphitheater in New Haven, Conn. Tip-off for the Ivy League matchup is
slated for 7 p.m.
