PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball
team fell in its Big 5 opener to No. 21 Temple, 72-53, at The
Palestra Tuesday evening.
The Quakers (1-1) kept the score close throughout the first half
behind strong defense and a sub-par shooting effort by the Owls
(4-0), who made just 14-of-33 shots. Senior Jennifer Fleischer
hit two free throws with 22 seconds left in the first half to
bring Penn within four points of Temple at intermission.
Penn kept battling in the second half but Temple put together a
series of runs behind the solid play of Khadija Bowens and
All-American candidate Candice Dupree, outscoring the Quakers
44-29.
Dupree, who was held without a basket for the first 15 minutes
of the game, scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half,
while Bowens paced all scorers with 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting.
Fleischer led the Quakers with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Joey
Rhoads and Monica Naltner added 10 points apiece.
Penn next travels to Seattle, Wash., to take part in the Washington
Husky Classic, with the first game on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 3:30
p.m., against Rice. The Quakers will then play on Sunday against
either host Washington or San Diego at a time yet to be determined.
