Katie Kilker's steal with 45 seconds remaining helped to
seal Penn's 58-50 victory over
Princeton.
Box Score
Philadelphia - Penn women's basketball held Princeton without a field
goal for the final six minutes, 44 seconds of the Quakers' 58-50 win
over the Tigers at The Palestra on Tuesday night. Karen Habrukowich
and Joey Rhoads led all scorers with 15 points apiece.
A second half run by the Tigers gave Princeton a 36-27 lead on a Katy
O'Brien trey at the 15:12 mark. Penn answered with a Naltner lay up
but Princeton equaled its largest lead of nine on a Rebecca Brown lay
up with 13:23. Brown finished with 12 points and Casey Lockwood led
Princeton with 14 on 6-for-11 shooting. The Quakers, having experienced
scoring runs against them in the recent past, turned the tables on
Princeton, scoring the next 10 points to tie the score at 38 with 9:48
remaining.
Katie Kilker began the run with a pair of free throws and Habrukowich
followed with a lay up. Rhoads brought the Quakers within a bucket,
38-36, with one of her three treys on the night at the 10:45 mark.
Habrukowich tied the score at 38 on yet another lay up. Both teams
traded leads over the next three minutes with Princeton taking its
final advantage on a Meagan Cowher baseline jumper at the 6:44 mark.
It would be the last field goal the Tigers could muster. Penn took the
lead for good at the 5:48 mark on a Rhoads jumper and finished the game
on a 14-5 run. Kilker secured the victory with her only steal of the
game,
intercepting an O'Brien pass attempt into the post.
Rhoads was 5-for-11 from the field in her third-career start. Despite
being held to just a pair of field goals in the first half, Habrukowich
was 4-for-7 in the second half to finish with her 15 points. Ashley Gray
led the Red and Blue on the glass with a career-high six rebounds.
The Red and Blue victory was aided by Princeton's inability to do two
things, take care of the ball and make free throws. Penn outscored the
Tigers, 22-4, off turnovers and Princeton finished the game 7-for-19
from the line.
Penn (13-10, 6-4 Ivy) and Princeton (12-11, 4-6 Ivy) each opened the
game with respective 10-2 runs. Monica Naltner, who finished with nine
points, scored five of the Red and Blue's first 10.
The Class of '05's final home Ivy weekend occurs this Friday and Saturday
when Cornell and Columbia visit The Palestra on Feb. 25-26. Both games
tip
off at 7 p.m.
