Jennifer Fleischer scored 22 points and grabbed 11
rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Philadelphia - Hearts were broken for the second-straight
night in The Palestra as the Penn women's basketball team
fell to Dartmouth, 73-71, after a dramatic comeback that
saw the Quakers dig themselves out from a 13-point deficit
only to have the Big Green hit the winning shot with seven
seconds remaining in the game. Three Quakers scored in
double figures with Jennifer Fleischer matching a career
high with 22 points and recording her sixth double-double
of the season with 11 boards.
A 13-point deficit in the second half would not do in the
Quakers (10-8, 3-2 Ivy) but that was the scene when Ashley
Taylor scored a lay up at the 14:24 mark to give Dartmouth
(9-8, 5-0 Ivy) a 51-38 lead. Taylor led the Big Green with
a career-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field,
5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Penn skimmed seven points off
the lead when Karen Habrukowich scored three of her 13
second-half points on a lay up and foul shot to make the
score 69-63 in favor of the visiting team. After a Krista
Perry lay up made the score 71-63, the Red and Blue ran off
eight unanswered points. Joey Rhoads, who finished with
six points, hit two free throws at the 3:36 mark after being
fouled on a three-point attempt. Amanda Kammes scored a lay
up and was fouled. She missed the ensuing free throw but
Fleischer was there for the offensive board and her put back
made the score 71-69 with 2:26 left. Dartmouth's missed
jumper was followed by a Monica Naltner field goal from the
top of the key to tie the score at 71 with just 1:31 remaining
in regulation. It was the first time the score had been tied
since it was 34-all with 2:58 to go in the first half. Each
team had one possession and could not capitalize as the clock
ticked down but Elise Morrison, who finished with 11 points
after managing only two in the first half, scored the decisive
lay up with seven ticks left on the clock. Kammes drove the
length of the court and attempted an off-balance shot as time
expired but the Big Green escaped The Palestra with their fifth
League win of the season.
Habrukowich was a spark in the second half after having only
six points in the first, she lit up Dartmouth for 13 points in
the second. Naltner registered her second-straight double
figure night with 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Kammes paced
Penn with five assists to go along with seven points on 3-of-4
shooting.
Dartmouth was volcanic from beyond the arc, erupting for eight
made treys in 11 attempts in the first half (72.7 percent) and
hitting 11-of-18 61.1 percent) for the game. The Big Green had
four players in double figures. Joining Taylor and Morrison were
Angie Soriaga with 11 and Jeannie Cullen with 14 off the bench.
Penn heads to the Big Apple on Feb. 11 as the Quakers travel to
Columbia for a 7 p.m. tip off, followed by a meeting with Cornell
on Feb. 12.
