Monica Naltner was a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line,
scoring 12 total points in the victory.
New Haven, Conn. - On a night when neither team was feeling
it from the floor, the Quakers dug down defensively to pull
out a 53-40 Ivy League-opening victory at the John J. Lee
Amphitheater. Yale's 40 points were the least allowed by the
Red and Blue in an Ancient Eight contest since five years ago
today.
Penn (8-6, 1-0 Ivy) was held without a field goal during the
first five minutes and 48 seconds of the game as the Bulldogs
(3-13, 0-3 Ivy) mounted an 11-3 advantage. Despite the cold
shooting, the Quakers rattled off 10-straight points and took
their first lead of the night, 13-11, on a Jennifer Fleischer
turn around in the lane at the 6:24 mark. Fleischer led all
scorers with 15 points as well as leading both squads on the
boards with nine. The two teams traded the lead throughout the
remainder of the first half but a Cat Makarewich free throw at
the end of the first half gave Penn a 19-15 lead at the break.
Makarewich finished the game with seven points.
The Quakers built its first double-digit lead, 35-25, on a
Karen Habrukowich free throw at the 11:36 mark of the second
half. Habrukowich would finish with eight as she tied Beth
Stegner for 14th on Penn's all-time scoring list with 1,013
career points.
Monica Naltner sparked the Red and Blue with six points in the
first half as the sophomore finished with 12 on 3-of-8 shooting
and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Tory Mauseth and
Morgan Richards led Yale with seven points apiece.
The 40 points scored on Penn were the least given up by the
Quakers in an Ivy League contest since giving up 43 to Columbia
on Jan. 28, 2005. The Quakers go for a sizth-straight win when
they visit Brown on Jan. 29 at the Pizzitola S****ts Center at 7 p.m.
