Amanda Kammes' finger roll at the buzzer gives Penn its first
Philadelphia Big 5 win of the season.
Philadelphia - Amanda Kammes used a finger roll in the lane as time
expired to lift Penn past La Salle, 51-49, in both teams'
Philadelphia Big 5 opener. The Quakers used a 7-2 run in the final
two minutes, 52 seconds to tie the score and Karen Habrukowich's
half-court pass to Kammes set up the game winner with no time left
on the clock. With the scored knotted at 49, Penn's defense spread
the Explorers' offense to every corner of the front court and forced a
shot-clock violation as Meghan Wilkinson's three-point attempt barely
drew glass. Having to traverse the length of the court in three seconds,
Habrukowich, fini****ng the game with seven points and five rebounds, sent
a
chest pass towards Kammes. The senior starting point guard dribbled to
the
top of the key, hesitated, and drove the lane for the decisive basket.
Kammes led the Quakers with a career-high 12 points on 4-fo-9 shooting
from
the floor.
Penn (2-0) led 8-4 on a Cat Makarewich three-point field goal, a Jennifer
Fleischer lay up and a Kammes score and made foul shot. There was 16:37
remaining on the clock in the first half and the Red and Blue had hit all
three attempts taken from the field. The Explorers (1-2) woke up, taking
their first lead of the game, 12-11, on a Charlene Hightower jumper with
7:51 remaining before the break. The field goal came in the midst of a
20-12 run to end the first half and give the visiting team a 24-20 lead
heading into the locker room. The Quakers battled from three to five
points behind through most of the second half but Lauren Pears, who
finished
with a career-high five points, scored a lay up on a fast break to pull
Penn
to within one, 38-37. Katie Kilker, pouring in 10 points on 4-of-8
shooting,
pulled her team back to within a point, 41-40, with a lay up and gave
the Quakers their first lead since the 8:46 mark of the first half on a
put
back lay up with 7:44 remaining.
La Salle scored the game's next six points. The Explorers' leading scorer
Davineia Payne, 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting, knocked two lay ups and a
jumper to give her team a 47-42 lead with 3:15 left in regulation.
Fleischer,
who finished with six points and nine boards, scored on her own miss and
followed with a pair of free throws to make the score 47-46 with 1:22 left
on
the clock. With La Salle leading, 49-47, Kammes missed a pair of free
throws but was not boxed out, secured he own rebound and hit a jumper in
the
lane with 34 seconds remaining to tie the score at 49.
The Quakers have a short time to relish their first Big 5 win of the
season
As they board a plane for Colorado on Wednesday. The team will take on
Colorado, No. 2 LSU and No. 22 Maryland at the 18th Annual Coors Classic
held in Boulder, Colo.
Penn opens with host Colorado on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. (MST).
