ITHACA, N.Y. - The Penn women's basketball team outlasted
Cornell at Newman Arena on Friday night to defeat the Big
Red, 69-66. Jewel Clark scored 18 points to lead the Quakers
and Penn's bench outscored Cornell, 28-1.
The Big Red showed their size over the first 5:15, only
allowing one Penn field goal and jumping out to a 9-3 lead.
Tanya Karcic, who led all scorers with 27 points, hit three
field goals and finished the first half with 13 points on
6-of-8 shooting from the floor.
The Quakers answered with a 13-2 run, which spanned five
minutes, 33 seconds, taking a 16-11 lead at the 4:42 mark
on a Karen Habrukowich three-pointer. Habrukowich's five
points and a pair of buckets from Monica Naltner sparked
the first half scoring spurt.
The Red and Blue lead grew to eight points, 23-15, on a
pair of Amanda Kammes free throws but then the Quakers
did not score until the 1:55 mark, allowing Cornell to
score 10 straight points and take a 25-23 lead on a
Karcic field goal. Kammes scored six points over the
final six minutes, three seconds and Clark hit a put
back as time expired to finish the half with six points
and the scored knotted at 27.
Cornell and the Quakers battled to maintain the lead
throughout the first nine minutes of the second half.
The Big Red took a 44-39 lead at the 13:40 mark on a
Lauren Kilduff jumper. Karen Force scored seven of her
23 points in the early part of the second period to help
give Cornell the lead but Penn pulled back to within one
point on a pair of free throws at the 10:45 mark and tied
the score at 45 on two foul shots from Naltner with 10:02
remaining in regulation.
Kilduff knocked down a free throw at 9:46 and then a field
goal at 9:08. That, coupled with a jumper from Karcic and
two foul shots from Karen Force made the score 52-47 in
favor of the Big Red at the 7:44 mark.
The Quakers came storming back, scoring the game's next
12 points starting with a Katie Kilker lay-up and a pair
of treys, one from Habrukowich at 7:03 and another from
Joey Rhoads at 5:40 to give Penn a 55-52 lead. Clark hit
a lay up and Cat Makarewich scored two of her eight
second-half points. Clark finished the game with 18 points
and eight rebounds. Kilker closed the run with another
lay up at 5:15 to make the score 57-52.
Cornell pulled to within one possession with one minute
to go but a Katie Romey three-pointer bounced off the back
iron. Habrukowich controlled the rebound, was fouled and
missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Big Red
life. Force missed a three-pointer at the buzzer, giving
Penn the three-point win and a 15-8 overall record, 9-1 in
the Ivy League.
The Penn bench came through again as the Quakers' bench out
shot Cornell's reserves, 28-1. Makarewich and Kilker, who
finished with eight points apiece, led the bench bunch.
The Quakers travel to the Big Apple on Saturday to face Columbia
at Levien Gym. Tip off is 7 p.m.
